The Best Movies to Watch When You’re Stuck Inside on a Rainy Day

A Family Lying Down With Pillows Watching Movies

When you’re stuck inside on a rainy day, it can feel like there aren’t that many things to do. If you’re feeling trapped and frustrated in gloomy and wet weather, why not have a movie marathon? There are many different movie genres that are perfect to watch on a rainy day.

It can be difficult to feel inspired to do anything or go anywhere in wet weather, so why not snuggle up, get cosy and have a movie marathon at home? (When you’re not playing bingo, of course.)

With so many online streaming sites and movies to choose from, it can be tough to decide on what to watch though. That’s why we’ve put together this list of some of the best movies to watch on a rainy day, organised by genre. Hopefully, this list will bring back some fond memories, or inspire you to check out some movies you’ve never watched before!

1.Romance

If you feel like getting a dose of the warm and fuzzies, a rainy day could be the perfect time to snuggle up and get cosy, alone or with a loved one, and watch a romantic movie. There are several you can choose from, whether you’re looking for something lighthearted and upbeat, or you’re not afraid to get out those tissues and have a good cry.

For the romantic at heart, classics like Scent of a Woman with Al Pacino and Chris O’Donnell are a beautiful reminder of the power of friendship. Or, if you’re more a fan of saucy makeout scenes that take place in the rain, put on The Notebook with Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling. For something a little bit more offbeat, you can try Stranger than Fiction, where Will Ferrell steps away from his usual slapstick roles and plays a more serious character. Or, if you’re a fan of the good ole rom-com, choose a Sandra Bullock classic like Two Weeks’ Notice or The Proposal.

2. Horror

If you get an adrenaline rush from getting scared out of your wits while watching horror movies, the rainy weather will definitely help set the scene! Gloomy, stormy weather is the perfect excuse to get cosy and tuck into some scary movies. While you can do this alone, we’d recommend having at least one other person for company!

Whether you like thrillers, gore or the paranormal, there are many different kinds of horror movies to choose from. If you’re a fan of carnage you could watch Saw, or if you’d like to relive the classic thriller scenes of The Shining, this could be the perfect time. Lovers of the paranormal might also be keen to try Paranormal Activity or more psychological horror thrillers like The Silence of the Lambs.

3. Comedy

Phew, with all the excitement of rain-soaked love scenes and gory horror films, it might also be a good idea to look at some lighthearted comedy movies to help lift you out of the doldrums. While you might be used to rainy weather, it can still get you down, so there’s no harm in having a good laugh to help cheer yourself up on a grey day.

If you’re a fan of Will Ferrell and the gang, watching Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is sure to have you and your housemates quoting the movie again for weeks to come. If you’re not so into slapstick, but still looking for a laugh, movies like The Full Monty, or even some Monty Python reruns might do the trick.

Those with a darker sense of humour could always go for something like In Bruges or Death at a Funeral.

4. Adventure

One of the best genres to lose yourself in, regardless of the weather! Whether it’s exotic locales, hair-raising stunts or discovering hidden secrets and treasure, there are many adventure movies to keep you entertained on a rainy day.

If you’re a fan of old school classics, get Harrison Ford and his fedora to join your movie marathon with reruns of the Indiana Jones series. Rainy days can also be the ideal time to watch longer movies that you might not usually have the time for. Fancy escaping to Hogwarts for a catch up of all 8 Harry Potter films? Or maybe a trip to Middle Earth for The Lord of the Rings trilogy or The Hobbit could do you good.

5. Sci-fi

Speaking of escapism, there is a whole world of science fiction films that will make you forget you’re even on planet Earth. While the sci-fi genre is broad, there are many different ways to enjoy it, whether you’re a fan of outer space or movies with plots set in the future.

Some of the classic staples are the Star Wars movies, which will keep you busy for quite some time, or the Guardians of the Galaxy series, which is a more lighthearted spin on the sci fi theme. If you’re more into the dark, dystopian flavour of sci-fi, both the classic and newly released versions of Bladerunner could help pass the time in stormy weather.
