A Guide to Online Slots Lingo

If you’re new to the world of online slots, you may have seen some terms that you’re not familiar with. To help you understand all these new phrases, our team at Booty Bingo has compiled a list of all the online slots lingo that you may need help with.

What do these online slot terms mean?

3-reel: This is a slot that features a reel with 3 columns.

5-reel: No surprise here: this is a slot with a 5-column reel.

Action: Action can refer to the amount a player bets during a specific window of play and is sometimes used by casinos to set certain criteria for bonus requirements. For example, you need to clear a certain bet value (or have enough action) within a certain amount of time to withdraw any winnings from a bonus.

All-ways pays: While most slots count winning combinations from left to right, all-ways machines also count combinations from right to left. Some slots take the concept a little further. These slots don’t require that your symbols be on the same line, but simply are in the correct order according to the columns in the reel. This helps simplify the game for players who aren’t interested in keeping track of winning combinations across lines.

Auto spin: This is the automatic spin feature that you can use so you don’t have to manually click spin when you want to play. You can set a specific number of spins with a specific betting value and watch as the game automatically spins for you. You can stop auto-spin at any time.

Blank: Some slot games feature blank symbols, or non-symbols, on some of the reels. They’re not a particularly welcome sight, as they make it harder for players to hit winning combinations in the game.

Bonus round: Depending on the game, you may be able to trigger bonus rounds. Some games will trigger a bonus round when you land a specific number of scatter or wild symbols. Others will require you to also make a Max Bet to access the bonus round.

A mobile phone, tablet, and laptop have an online slot game on screen showing that a free-spins bonus round has been triggered.

Credits: Some games don’t use a specific currency, but instead use game credits that you can purchase with the money you deposit. In online slots, this means a player can purchase a certain amount of credits, which they then wager in varying amounts, depending on the game. The player, if lucky, will also win credits, which they can then convert back to real currency.

Expanding wilds: Some slots feature expanding wilds, which not only fill a single space but also grow to cover multiple spaces on a reel. This gives players a greater chance to win. Players tend to like these!

Free play: Many online slots offer a demo version of the game that you can play without any money. You won’t win any prizes, but you can play free of charge for as long as you like. This is known as demo mode, or free play. It’s a cool way to get to know the slot and see if you like the graphics.

Max bet: The maximum amount of credits or currency that you can wager on a single spin.

Min bet:  That’s right: this is the minimum amount of credits or currency that you can wager on a single spin.

One-armed bandit: Older players will know exactly what this means, but younger players are unlikely to be familiar with this term. A one-armed bandit refers to the original mechanical slot machines, which had an arm or lever that you pulled to spin the reel.

Pay line: A pay line is the combination of symbols that will result in a win. They can be straight, diagonal, zigzag, or simply require that a certain number of symbols appear on the reel. It depends entirely on each game – variety’s the spice of life!

Pay table: The pay table shows the player what each symbol is worth, what special symbols do, how to activate bonus features, and other information you need to play the game. It’s a great place to start when you’re trying out a new slot.

Progressive jackpot: Many slots have fixed jackpots, but progressive jackpots grow as more people place bets and spin (the more, the merrier!). Sometimes progressive jackpots are connected across multiple slots. If a player wins such a jackpot, it’ll reset to a certain minimum value and then start growing all over again.

A jackpot sign shines brightly with gold coins stacked up in front of it.

RNG: This term is an acronym for the phrase “random number generator”. RNGs use software to create the random numbers or results that drive the majority of online casino games. They are audited by third parties to ensure that their results are fair and accurate.

RTP: Want to know what you are likely to get back on your bet? Look up the return to player, or RTP, to find out what a player is theoretically likely to win if they were to play an incredibly large number of games. For example, a game with an RTP of 95% means that for every £100 a player bets, they’re likely to get £95 back. Again, even though this is referred to as a percentage, the amount that is paid back is calculated over far more than 100 games.

Scatter symbol: Scatter symbols may have different effects, depending on the game. Scatter symbols can unlock additional bonuses such as free spins, mini-games, or in some cases, multipliers to boost your winnings. Every slots fan has a place in their heart for scatters!

Tilt: Originally a term from poker, tilt is used to refer to a player who is emotionally frustrated and playing badly as a result. An example of a player going on tilt would be when a player is on a losing streak and refuses to take a break to allow them to clear their heads to prevent a mistake that costs them a game. This causes them to make aggressive bets or plays that are usually a bad idea. Specifically, in slots games, it can also refer to a machine that has malfunctioned or tilted.

Variance: The risk level of a game is referred to as its variance. Games with high variance provide fewer wins, but when players do win, they win big; games with low variance have more wins, but the prizes are smaller.

Wild symbol: A wild symbol can fill in or substitute for another symbol to help you get a winning combination or pay line. They tend to be specific to the slot you’re playing. It’s also worth noting that wilds cannot fill in for scatters.
